DIY
Totally un-Avery related (in fact, I think this is the first non-Avery related post on this entire blog!), but I just finished my first "true" DIY project and wanted to share! After seeing a great tutorial on staining cabinets on where else, PINTEREST, (TUTORIAL HERE) I decided to bite the bullet and just try it out! Needless to say all 3 of our bathroom vanities are still torn apart, but I am almost done! Since I still had plenty of gel stain to go around, I decided to tackle our golden-oak covered fireplace and will also do our kitchen island. Because we love this dark stained wood so much, I think we may/may not do our entire kitchen too! I just say that I am pretty proud of myself - these staining projects have been done 100% ME - no help from the hubby! Helps me feel like I am pulling some weight in this house ;) Enjoy! Will post bathroom pictures as soon as they are put back together (hopefully early next week!)
I have this exact same mantle and would love to do this! Do you have any tips or suggestions about doing the teeth and small grooves under the mantle?
ReplyDeleteHi there! I actually used q-tips and a small brush to get in the little spaces - tedious, but it gets the job done! :) good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi, did you use a top coat? If so, which finish?
ReplyDeleteGood morning! I did use a gel poly (same as the stain). Here is the link! http://www.rockler.com/general-finishes-gel-topcoat
DeleteGood luck with your project! :)
Did you sand at all?
ReplyDeleteAnd if so, how did you sand the little grooves? We are working on changing our whole home over to the java gel stain.
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa! I did sand a little bit, but maybe 30 seconds per door. The instructions I followed didn't stress that much sanding would need to be done. I used the corner of my sanding block to run along all of the grooves, and then a combo of a foam brush + q-tips to get the stain in there! You'll have to report back and how yours turned out. I've had the stain to do the kitchen for over year - that's next on my list!
ReplyDeleteHi, I know this is an old post, but the tutorial link doesn't work. Can I see the tutorial? Your mantle looks lovely!
